Animals and education have played integral roles in my life.
Growing up on a working farm, where my parents still raise cattle, goats, and sheep, my childhood was filled with showing livestock and caring for our personal pets. I later became a teacher, spending seven years in the classroom, first teaching elementary school and then serving as an instructional coach, where I helped teachers become more effective in their jobs.
It was the combination of my passions for animals and education that led me to devote myself full-time to dog training. In this vocation, I have the privilege of helping pet owners communicate more effectively with their pets. I also get to help furry friends feel more secure in their homes by teaching them new skills that build confidence.
Along with earning my AKC Evaluator Certification, I’ve spent time learning from and shadowing trainers with different training philosophies. I’m always expanding my knowledge by attending workshops and staying current with the latest research on best practices in the field.
My goal is always to create peace and harmony in the homes of pet owners. Just like the children I taught, I know that your dog wants to succeed as part of your family. I’m here to give you and your dog the tools for success.
My area of specialty is family dogs and all things puppy-related. That’s why my group classes focus on obedience, proper socialization, and helping new dog owners understand dog enrichment! Because I believe group classes are vital to your dog's well-being and can even make or break your pup's successful integration into your home, I am intentional about making Leashed K9 group classes as affordable as possible.
Even in my free time, dogs are at the center of my world—when I’m not at the studio, you can usually find me and my dog Doja competing at agility competitions.
I’m a balanced trainer. This means I blend positive reinforcement with appropriate corrections. My focus is on helping you and your dog build trust with one another.
Positive reinforcement is all about rewarding your dog for correct behavior. By associating the right behavior with something desirable, we encourage its repetition. In my classes, this means lots of high-value treats, tummy rubs, and praise. We always aim to end on a positive note.
Your dog needs good manners, both inside and outside your home. Corrections help establish boundaries and address behaviors that are dangerous, disruptive, or undesirable. Corrections typically include verbal cues like "uh-oh" or gentle leash corrections.
The most important aspect of balanced training is understanding that every dog is an individual. They each have unique strengths, histories, needs, and motivations. Balanced training means I take all of that into consideration and work with you to build the best possible bond with your pup.
